Maurice (Bill) Karl, PhD

Chief Technology Officer

Dr. Maurice W. (Bill) Karl is the Chief Technology Officer of Purple Tree Technologies, responsible for research and development, design and deployment of a geo-specific targeted emergency alert system, which utilizes cellular broadcast technology. Dr. Karl brings nearly 20 years of engineering experience to his position.

Dr. Karl founded Purple Tree Technologies in 2003 after realizing that part of his life’s work was to create an inexpensive life-saving device that works in tandem with the Emergency Alert System (formerly the Emergency Broadcast System) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Weather Service (NWS) to warn individuals of impending natural disasters, terrorist attacks and other emergencies.

Before establishing Purple Tree Technologies, Dr. Karl served in several engineering positions over 17 years at 3M including manufacturing engineering specialist in which he most recently acted as supervisor and material engineer for the electronic product division’s plant quality department. Prior to those responsibilities, Dr. Karl worked in 3M’s advance process technology manufacturing group, focusing on copper plating and laser drilling processes. When he became a manufacturing engineering specialist in 1998, he served as process engineer for the diamond-like-carbon (DLC) coating process. Prior to that, he spent four years as a senior process engineer in laser ablation in the micro-flex department. From 1992-1994, Dr. Karl served as senior process engineer in the micro-interconnect system’s chemical milling and etch flash processes. He began his career at 3M as an advance process engineer, in development and optimization of circuit and cover plating in 1988.

Prior to employment at 3M, Dr. Karl worked as a design and test electrical engineer at MITRE Corporation for a year. Dr. Karl also served in the United States Marine Corps from 1976-1983.

Dr. Karl is the recipient of several distinguished awards and honors, including the 1999 3M Electronic Product Division Recognition Award, the 1996 3M Process Technology Award, the 1995 Corporate Quality Award, the 1995 Golden Step Award and the 1993 Chairman’s Environment Award.

Dr. Karl earned his doctorate in physical chemistry from the University of Missouri in 2006. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Purdue University in 1987. He resides in Columbia, Missouri with his daughters, Milissa and Elise Karl.
